The defending state champions, Cardinal Mooney, and the rising Somerset Canyon Cougars squared off in the opening round of the 2A FHSAA playoffs on Friday night. With the first play being a deep touchdown pass to junior Kymistrii Young, Mooney established control right away. Connail Jackson and Devin Mignery added many touchdown runs to the score, demonstrating Mooney's offensive prowess.
Somerset Canyon, however, was not going to give up easily. The game was within reach because to the Cougars' inventive play-calling, which included two deep ball passes to junior Dereion Darby and a masterful Philly Special by senior Jayden Harrington. As the game progressed, these crucial plays kept Somerset competitive.
Ultimately, Somerset was unable to handle Cardinal Mooney's potent offensive firepower and formidable defense, which was spearheaded by four-star players Elijah Golden and Da'ron Parks. The reigning state champions will play King's Academy, another formidable Palm Beach County club, in the following round of the playoffs. Two great teams are poised to compete in an entertaining encounter in the second round.
